About this collection

These are letters and notes written by Tobias Lear (1762-1816). Lear was George Washington's executive secretary from 1786 to 1799. These manuscripts are almost exclusively written on behalf of General and Mrs. Washington and relate primarily to their personal business rather than affairs of state.
