About this collection

Harriot Washington (1776–1822) was the youngest daughter, and 8th of the 9 children of Samuel Washington, George Washington's younger brother. After her father died in 1781 -- and particularly after her stepmother died 2 years later -- Harriot came under the general care of her uncle and aunt, living some of the time at Mount Vernon. These letters express a sincere respect of her "honored uncle" and repeatedly acknowledge her own dependence on his generosity as she makes yet one more request of him.
