About this collection

Robert Lewis (1769-1829) was the tenth son of Betty and Fielding Lewis and therefore a nephew of George Washington. He served as private secretary to George Washington from 1789-1791. After that he was made responsible for Washington's western Virginia lands, collecting rents, overseeing leases, and the like. Lewis later served as mayor of Fredericksburg for two terms. This collection includes a diary from 1789 that describes his life as a member of the presidential family.
